Effective
Enabled Notes records meetings, turns speech into a transcript and writes notes from it. It is built to keep your notes on your device. We have no servers and no accounts, and the app contains no analytics, advertising or tracking code.
What stays on your device
- Audio. The microphone is used only while you are recording. The audio is turned into text as you record and is never saved or sent anywhere.
- Transcripts and notes. Your transcripts, the notes the app writes, note names, labels and your prompts are stored only in the app on your device. They are not synced to iCloud. Like other app data, they are included in your device backups (iCloud Backup or a computer backup) if you have backups turned on.
- Speech recognition. Transcription runs on your device using Apple's speech recognition. Your device may download language files from Apple; your recordings are not sent.
- On-device AI. By default, notes are written by Apple Intelligence on your device. Nothing is sent to us or to anyone else.
- API keys. If you add an API key for a cloud AI provider, it is stored in your device's Keychain, available only on this device. It is not synced to iCloud Keychain and does not move to a new device.
Optional cloud AI
You can choose to use a cloud AI provider instead of on-device AI: Anthropic, OpenAI or Google. This is off unless you turn it on, enter your own API key and agree on a consent screen. While a cloud provider is on, the app sends directly from your device to that provider, over an encrypted connection:
- the instructions of your AI prompts,
- the transcript of each note you process (in parts if it is long),
- the first part of a transcript, when you ask the app to suggest a name for a note.
Audio is never sent. We do not receive any of this data: it goes from your device to the provider, under your own account with that provider. The provider's own terms and privacy policy apply:
- Anthropic says it deletes API inputs and outputs within 30 days, with exceptions such as legal requirements. See Anthropic's data retention article.
- OpenAI says it does not use API data to train its models unless you opt in, and keeps abuse-monitoring logs for up to 30 days. See OpenAI's API data controls.
- Google terms depend on your key. With a free Gemini key, Google may use your content to improve its products, and people at Google may read it. A key from a project with billing enabled avoids this. See the Gemini API terms.
Data sent to a cloud provider is handled under that provider's terms for your own account, not by us. We do not share your data with anyone else.
Withdrawing consent. You can stop sending data to a cloud provider at any time: in Settings, switch back to on-device AI or delete your API key. Nothing more is sent from then on. To delete what a provider already holds, use the controls in your account with that provider or contact the provider, since we never receive or hold that data.
Send Feedback
Settings > Help > Send Feedback opens your Mail app with a message to us and a small diagnostics file attached. The file lists:
- the app version, your iOS version, device model and languages,
- which transcription engine and AI provider are in use, and the AI model's name,
- whether an API key is set (never the key itself),
- whether on-device AI is available.
It never contains your notes, transcripts, prompts, keys or audio. Nothing is sent unless you tap Send, and you can read or remove the attachment first. We use your email only to answer you and fix problems, and we delete it once that is done. You can ask us to delete your email sooner by writing to the address below.
Permissions
- Microphone: to record. You can turn this off in iOS Settings at any time.
Deleting your data
Deleting a note removes it from the app. Deleting the app removes all its data from your device. A copy may remain in your device backups until those backups are replaced. Because your notes never reach us, we cannot see, recover or delete them for you.
Children
The app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update it here and change the effective date. If what the app sends to a cloud provider ever changes, the app will ask for your consent again before sending anything.
Where to find this policy
This policy is linked from the App Store listing and in the app under Settings > Help > Privacy Policy.
